Georg Iggers: Early Interest in Jewish Culture

Georg Iggers in front of the former Talmud Torah School in Hamburg, 2005

“I think it had something to do with my reawakening as a Jew, and this was partly my reaction against the Nazis. It also had something to do with the Jewish kids I met and had things to do with. Also went that way, and it had also to do with my reaction against my parents who were not liberal Jews, they were basically non-practising (…) Jews. And I felt they should be more practising. Well, I was very young, but I think I was also, in some ways, intellectually and politically very conscious. I was very much aware of what was going on around me. And that was part of me.”
