Georg Iggers: Reports on his school days in 1933: Swastika flag and Hitler salute

“I can still remember how the flag was changed, so the flag of the Weimar Republic was the same flag as the flag of the Federal Republic, and suddenly the black-red-gold flag disappeared and then the swastika flag came. And, so we always said “Good morning” or “Good day” to the teacher when he came into the class, and after a few months he told us, so you are no longer allowed to greet me with “Good day,” you have to stand next to your desk and say “Heil Hitler.” I had do so, too. And,then, on Monday morning, every Monday morning, we were gathered in the schoolyard, and the Nazi flag was hoisted, and then the principal, the principal in Nazi uniform, gave a speech, and the Deutschlandlied was sung, and immediately after the Deutschlandlied the Horst Wessel song. So I had to join in there, too.”
