Georg Iggers: Why I attended Talmud Torah School

Georg Iggers in front of former Talmud Torah School in Hamburg, 2005

First, I always felt more Jewish and my reaction against Nazi discrimination was that I would like to have more contact with Jewish peers. And then I was also in the Jewish sports club “Bar Kochba” without my parents’ permission and in Jewish youth clubs. That was one reason. The other reason was that in October 1936 it was already very rare for Jewish children to go to public schools. So I was still there and my class teacher, he tried to convince my parents that I should stay in school, but very soon I would have had to leave school anyway.
