Wilma Iggers: Living among blacks on campus

Wilma Iggers, Bielefeld 2006

“First of all, we didn’t live on campus because there were no apartments on campus. So for the first few weeks, we lived in a small apartment in a white neighborhood. Then we moved onto campus. Almost all of our neighbors were Black. They were friendly but distant, not only toward us, but also toward each other, for example, toward the poor Black people who lived in the city. Back then, Little Rock was a very mixed city. There were streets with white people, and behind the backyards, there was a Black street — recognizable simply by the fact that the bathroom was somewhere in the backyard.”
