In Little Rock, the young Iggers family was on good terms with their black neighbors; among other things, the children often played together. The situation was different in New Orleans. The family initially did not live on campus, but in a nearby “white” area. There were problems there because of social contacts with black friends and colleagues. A capital ‘N’ was added to the family name on the front door sign to make ‘Niggers’, and at one point son Daniel was chased off the playground and Georg Iggers was offered a beating.
