In 1950 Wilma and Georg moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where Georg had obtained a position at the black and therefore underfunded Philander Smith College. There he campaigned successfully, among other things, for his black students to have access to the public library of Little Rock, which had previously been reserved exclusively for whites. The family, which had grown by 3 children in the meantime, lived in very simple living conditions on campus. The children playing together created social contacts with the black neighbors. The family moved to New Orleans in 1957, where Wilma and Georg had both obtained positions at Dillard University.
