In the fall of 1957, the struggle for equal access to schooling escalated in Little Rock. Little Rock Central High School is set to take in 9 black students for the first time, amid violent protests. Only when President Eisenhower sent the National Guard to Little Rock was it possible for the “Little Rock 9” to attend school, but this was still associated with great difficulties. Contemporary witnesses, including Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the students affected, tell of those days.
