Situation at the American School

Georg Iggers, Bielefeld 2006

“In many ways, life was different, and I probably felt that more than many of the kids of my age who came to America. So there were some things that I thought were good. School wasn’t as stressful as it was in Germany. We had more freedom, I think there was better discipline than in Germany, but with a lot less pressure. The teachers, it was almost all female teachers, were friendlier, more open, however, I thought the academic level was not as high as in Germany, and then I also advanced very quickly, I was supposed to be in 6th grade, was briefly in 4th grade because my English was not good enough yet, but was then in 8th grade within 2 months.”
