Georg Iggers: Arrival in N.Y.C. - School was much easier than in Germany

Georg Iggers, Bielefeld 2006

“Well I … Early in the morning, we passed the Statue of Liberty. And, of course, I knew something about New York. Of course, I admired the skyscrapers. And, the first day after our arrival, we took the fifth avenue bus from the northern end of Manhattan where we lived, all the way down to the Bowery. For me, it was exciting, suddenly to be in America. As far as school was concerned, as far as my fellow students were concerned, school was much easier, there was much less pressure than in Germany. … Gradually, I met good friends, not immediately, but in Richmond, Virginia, two or three years later, where I had some very close friends. Some were Americans who were not Jewish, who had very similar intellectual and cultural interests as I did.”
