Beating by Father Leads to Alerting Police

In the fall of 1937, my conflict with my parents reached a climax. I was disturbed not only by their authoritarian behavior per se, but even more by the arbitrariness of their decisions. During an argument with my father, we mobbed each other, and he beat me. In my rage, I broke the glass pane of the apartment door, whereupon police officers, who had been alerted by the noise, soon arrived. Although they behaved correctly, they used the occasion to search the bookcases for possible forbidden writings. I was so upset and depressed by this incident that I played truant from school for several days and instead wandered around the city.
