Wilma Abeles emigrates as a 17-year-old to Hamilton in the province of Ontario in Canada. She quickly learns English and finishes high school after one year. From 1940 she studied French and German at a small college. A few years later, she went to Chicago in the USA to earn a doctorate in German Studies. There she also met her future husband, Georg Iggers.
