Wilma Abeles was born on March 23, 1921, the eldest daughter of the Jewish landowner Karl Abeles and his wife Elsa, née Ornstein, in the Bohemian village of Mirschikau, near the Bavarian border in what was then Czechoslovakia. They spent a happy childhood on their parents’ farm in Bischofteinitz, today’s Horsovsky Tyn.
