"Become a Christian?" - Discussion with Esslingen students (2005)

Esslingen 2005

Pupil: “If you had known that it would be useful if you had become a Christian so that you would have been left alone - would you have done that? Or would that have been out of the question at all?”

Georg Iggers: “No! That would have been out of the question!”

Wilma Iggers: “I think I would have done it to save my life. I was never as religious as my husband. But if so, then I can also imagine that. That also has an old tradition. The Jews who had escaped in Spain around 1500 then became Marranos, i.e. outwardly they pretended to be Christians and nevertheless remained Jews internally. "

Georg Iggers: “Well - I tell you - my answer would be decided: no!”

Student: “Why?”

Georg Iggers: “Because I identify with Judaism. For me, Jewish upbringing also played a much larger role. On the other hand, I never saw Judaism in any narrow way as legality or nationality. So all religious traditions are a very mixed story.”
