Georg Iggers: Visit to the destroyed Bornplatz synagogue in Hamburg

Georg Iggers in Hamburg 2005

“So that was of course the main synagogue in Hamburg and of course I went here with my uncle, who was Orthodox. And I have become orthodox myself, also as a reaction against my parents. They were religious and went to the Bornplatz synagogue when they went to the synagogue.
In many ways they were three-day Jews. So you went to the synagogue on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, and my rebellion against my parents had something to do with their bourgeoisie and also with their lukewarm religion. Then I also became a Zionist.
I am not a Zionist today, and I am no longer Orthodox either.”

*Three main festive days: Rosch Haschana, Jom Kippur, Chanukka
