Georg Iggers: Mixed feelings during the stay in Germany in 1961

Georg Iggers in Göttingen, 2005

“I never believed in collective guilt, but I knew that a lot of Germans supported the Nazis and that there were very few who protested, even though we got to know people right here in Göttingen who were persecuted by the Nazis for political reasons. But we soon felt at home here and think that after two generations there is a completely different Germany. Basically a democratic Germany, although of course there are also things that worry us. So the negative attitude towards foreigners and of course the cases of right-wing extremist violence. I feel comfortable enough here in Göttingen. We have many friends, I have many academic contacts and I am now a German citizen again without having given up my American citizenship. "
