“After ‘66, and this was unusual, we also had very close contacts with the GDR. And, I made an effort, and that was possible as an American, to bring historians from the GDR and the Federal Republic together in America. We regularly invited GDR historians and West German historians to talks in the U.S. and also in Buffalo, together with Americans. And, yes, and my wife has also been very involved in German-Czech reconciliation. That has always been important, and that is actually our life.”
