Since 1966 Georg Iggers maintained contacts with historians in the GDR at the universities in Leipzig and Halle. In 1985, Wilma accompanied Georg for 3 months for research purposes in the GDR, where both had sufficient opportunity to get to know the socialist reality in the GDR. The two also came into contact with the GDR peace movement during one of their trips.
