Hans Schleier was one of the representatives of German Demokratic Republik (GDR) historiography who was also received and taken seriously in the old Federal Republic of Germany, above all due to his book on the ‘bourgeois German historiography of the Weimar Republic’, which is rich in material. This is shown not least by the deputy professorships in Bielefeld and Düsseldorf, which the historian, born in 1931, received after the dissolution of the Central Institute for History (or Institute for German History) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. Schleier had worked at the Academy Institute since its foundation in 1956, focusing exclusively on the German historiography of the ’long 19th century’ and the Weimar Republic.
