The Annales School is the most important group of French historians in the 20th century, spanning several generations. It established a new methodology and practice in the study of history (nouvelle histoire). Its three most important innovations were the focus on the economy and society, the development of quantifiable material and the orientation towards long-term developments. Karl Lamprecht’s methodological approach was of fundamental importance to her. The name derives from its journal, Annales d’histoire économique et sociale, which was founded in 1929 by Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre.‘
