Adenauer, Konrad

(1876 - 1967), first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany 1949 - 1963 and co-founder of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In terms of economic policy, Konrad Adenauer stood for the system of the social market economy. In both domestic and foreign policy, he pursued a western-oriented policy, which led, among other things, to the Federal Republic of Germany’s membership of NATO and the signing of the Treaty of Rome (1957).
